Starting a blog and making a commitment to a blog is very intimidating. After doing a little research I learned that you shouldn’t blog about something you aren’t familiar with or interested in. I have spent most of my adult life in or around Lake Cumberland. I (we) chose Lake Cumberland as our vacation destination early on and then it became a permanent home.
Not Love at First Sight!
Before going too far I thought it only fair to tell you how I came to Lake Cumberland. My story is interesting from the standpoint that I did not want to move to Lake Cumberland. I came kicking and screaming (kinda). My husband and I and our young daughter made our home in Houston, TX early in our marriage . Houston is where I wanted to stay, or at least I thought I did. In an effort to prove my point I asked my husband to move to this tiny part of the world, Lake Cumberland, without me and give it a try. Surely after a few months he would have his fill of what he called “Mayberry”. You see I was raised in the south central part of Kentucky but left when I went off to college never to return. I was bound for the city and all the excitement I thought I had missed. As it turns out the city is where I met my husband, but that’s a different story and I don’t have enough space to tell that story. Anyway….
“Mayberry” here we come
About 6 months after my husband moved to a secluded cabin on Lake Cumberland with a cystern (rain water gathered in a tank) as his source of water and no cable TV I thought for sure he would be headed back to Houston. But instead, that is where our Lake Cumberland life began. Mayberry was my husband’s favorite T.V. show growing up and on every turn in Russell County he found life mimicking T.V. He loved the fact that everyone knew everyone (accept him). It wouldn’t be long before our move to Lake Cumberland would change our way of life.
Lake Cumberland had never really been a part of my life growing up in Russell Springs/Jamestown. For my family the Lake was only meant for fishing and only my Dad did a little of that. Coming back to the area as an adult and with a family, the Lake soon became our favorite getaway.
Now I love the Lake Life!
It wasn’t long before we bought the “African Queen” pontoon and puttered off into the sunset.
The lake meant boating, swimming, fishing, skiing and tubing. And lucky for us, we later bought a house boat with a jet ski and paddle boards. We can’t get enough of what the lake has to offer and in the recent past we have expanded our water activities to the Cumberland River with canoeing and kayaking.
Well, I’ve just started to talk about the Lake and the communities around the Lake. I hope that you will share your Lake Cumberland experiences in the future. This blog is all about the life and happenings around one of the most beautiful lakes in America. Stay tuned…..
